5. Global Migrations in Film
Migration is both an urgent contemporary issue and an inherently complex phenomenon that must be approached from multiple disciplinary angles. This spring, look at film representations of migration from a variety of post-1970 periods and regions, especially migrations to the U.S. and Europe. By combining humanities (which often emphasize individual experiences/empathy) and social science approaches (which analyze underlying causes of & possible solutions), this course will equip you with a fuller understanding of, and response to, the issues of migration.
Films to be considered will range from 1980s classics such as "El Norte" to more recent offerings like Ai Weiwei's 2017 "Human Flow" and 2019 "Joy" by Sudabeh Mortezai. Combined course is offered as both WRLD 3150-1002 (#16382) and INST 3800-1002 and meets from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
