STEP 3: EMPLOYER LIST

You are now ready to build a list of employers to contact.  To do this, you must know these 3 facts about yourself. If you do not know these answers, you can not build an accurate list of companies to contact.

  1. What do you want to do?  (job title, career path)
  2. What industry do you wish to work in?  (energy, automotive, financial, etc...)
  3. Where do you want to work?  (geographically)

VERY IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
  • Your list of companies is limited only by your own motivation and imagination.
  • Any company, anywhere is a potential employer.
  • 50% of available positions are never advertised on job sites, etc. Contact them directly!
  • There are more companies in the world than attend EXPO and are listed on WorkNet.
  • You ARE good enough to work at that company, contact them!

The purpose of this list is to organize your search and follow-up with those employers you contact. This list created using any resources necessary, but must be a method you are comfortable with.  Some examples include:
  • Excel spreadsheets
  • Notebooks
  • Mobile apps
  • Journals
  • Databases

FOLLOW-UP is the most important part of your search.  Don't simply send and forget, nothing will happen.  Here is an example:
