1. Fall/Spring CURS Grants

This program provides up to $500 toward project costs ($750 if a group project by 3-5 students) associated with research, scholarship, and/or creative work facilitated by undergraduate students during the fall or spring semester under the supervision of one or two faculty mentors. It furthermore provides up to $200 of financial support in the form of a stipend for the undergraduate student conducting the project. Applications are welcomed from undergraduate students from all disciplines and fields, and participants need not be affiliated with the Honors College.

For full consideration, please completed the online application by following the link below. The online application requires basic information related to the student applicant (page 1), the faculty mentor(s) (page 2), and the project (page 3). On the last page of the application form, please upload the following three files:

1. Project narrative (2-3 pages including project title, introduction, scholarly question/topic, description of what student is planning to do for the project, anticipated outcomes, and brief discussion of how the project’s anticipated outcomes related to the project’s scholarly question/topic and fit into the current state of the project’s discipline)
2. Budget (itemized list of all anticipated purchases with individual costs as well as the total amount requested)
3. Reference Letter(s) by faculty mentor(s) indicating their support of the student and the project

Applications for this grant will be evaluated by the reviewers based on the following rubric:

1. Does the project have a clearly formulated research or scholarly question?
2. Is the research or scholarly question put into the context of the project’s discipline?
3. Is the project described adequately in terms of what the student will be doing and how?
4. Are the anticipated outcomes of the project adequately described?
5. Will the predicted outcomes advance the project’s discipline (outcomes do not have to be publishable on their own)?
6. Is the project feasible in the allotted time (a few hours per week for 10 weeks)?
7. Is the project well written and are there references to support the project (second part only to be considered, if applicable for project’s discipline)?
8. Does the budget adequately reflect the project’s goals (a budget of $0 is acceptable if no funds for the project are needed – the student will still get their stipend)?
9. Does the recommendation letter Indicate aptitude by the student to execute the project?
10. Does the recommendation letter indicate support for the project by the faculty mentor?

It furthermore provides $2,000 to $2,500 of financial support in the form of a stipend for the undergraduate student conducting the project, which will be paid out in bi-weekly installments during the summer. Applications are welcomed from undergraduate students from all disciplines and fields, and participants need not be affiliated with the Honors College.

Summer Application

4. CURS Travel Grant

This program provides up to $200 financial assistance to undergraduate students who present the results of their research or creative activities at professional conferences, competitions, juried exhibits or performances. The purpose of these funds is to help students gain experience in showcasing their work in a professional setting on a national level. Preference is given to students traveling within the United States. International funding is given on a case-by-case basis. To be eligible, a student must:

  • be a full-time undergraduate student at Bowling Green State University
  • have a faculty mentor
  • be registered for the conference or competition
  • present (i.e. paper, poster, research, performance) and/or participate (orally)

The same student may not receive more than one Travel Grant per academic year.

Travel funds may be available to assist with transportation expenses, lodging, conference registration, and some incidental costs, subject to the University's travel reimbursement regulations. All awards are subject to conditions set by Bowling Green State University and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Program.

Travel funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, each applicant should submit his/her application as early in the fiscal year as possible, and well in advance of the proposed travel. The application will be reviewed and the applicant will be notified of approval by phone and/or e-mail, as soon as possible.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted all year on a rolling basis, but please apply a minimum of four weeks before traveling.

After Travel

Upon return from the trip, all itemized receipts must be submitted to the CURS Office for processing. Submit the following applicable items via e-mail, fax (419-372-0393), mail or drop-off (024 Founders).

  • Itemized receipts of food items purchased
  • Proof of conference registration
  • Airfare itinerary
  • Hotel receipt

All items must be a accompanied by a bank or credit card statement or copy of check showing proof of draft or change to the account. The account from which the funds were drafted, or the credit card account on which the charges were made, must match the account on the corresponding receipt. These are requirements of Bowling Green State University Accounts Payable Department.

All items must be submitted within 30 days of the travel START date. If supporting documentation is not received within this time period you may be forced to forfeit your grant according to BGSU Accounts Payable regulations.
