The College of Musical Arts lost a remarkable man with the passing of faculty member Douglas Wayland on November 25, 2013; a man with a love of life and a passion for music and learning. In his honor, the college has renamed the Bowling Green Chamber Music Competition to the Douglas Wayland Chamber Music Competition. Wayland founded the competition in 2007 and served as coordinator for the two-day event. He was also a long-time member of the Pro Musica board for which he served as secretary.
A dear friend said, “he loved learning, he loved music, but the great joy of his life was teaching.” Wayland’s dedication to his students, and to creating opportunities for all students in the college, was well known. The Prestige Barbershop Quartet, which won a Gold Medal at the 2012 Harmony Foundation International Collegiate Barbershop Competition, was comprised of student’s from his studio. He was also the coach of the 2014 winning quartet.
Wayland held graduate and undergraduate degrees in vocal performance from BGSU. He would later be accepted into the DMA program at the University of Michigan, but changed his plans when he was awarded the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation Award to study in Bayreuth, Germany. Later in his life, he began to travel, perform, and eventually lecture extensively. Wayland spend many years as a tour guide for the Metropolitan Opera Guild using his language and music skills. German was his first language as he spent his early childhood living with his grandparents in Munich. A linguist, Wayland spoke eight languages fluently and sang repertoire in over 25. Myra Merritt, professor of voice, said of him “When one man touches and enhances so many lives, he is truly an extraordinary man!”
Eligibility
All competition participants must be either:
- Currently enrolled BGSU students registered for applied lessons in their medium of competition during the semester of the competition OR
- Students who are registered for student teaching the semester of the competition and who were registered for applied lessons in their medium of competition the previous semester.
- Students who are not currently enrolled in applied lessons, in their medium of competition, may participate if: A) they are enrolled in chamber music with a CMA faculty member as their coach AND B) approval for participation in chamber music is granted by the faculty member of that instrument, regardless of whether or not they are the coach of the ensemble AND C) the coach of the ensemble gives approval for the group to compete.
Winners of any previous BGSU College of Musical Arts competition are eligible to participate. However, past winners of the BGSU Chamber Music Competition are only permitted to compete in subsequent competitions in newly formed chamber groups, provided that no more than two past winners compete in the same ensemble and that the repertoire is different from past competitions. (This does not affect members of second place or audience choice award ensemble recipients of past competitions.)
The winning first and second-place ensembles in each division must be available to perform their pieces on the Winners’ Concert on Saturday, March 29 at 8 p.m. in Bryan Hall as well as at least 1 of the following:
Radio broadcast, WGTE Toledo: TBA
Simpson Garden Park, Bowling Green: TBA
All expenses, including transportation, hotels, and meals to/from these concerts are part of the prizes for the winning ensembles.
Additional concerts as part of the college's outreach program for winning, second place, and other participating ensembles will be announced later.
Competition Rules
For purposes of this competition, an eligible chamber ensemble shall be defined as an ensemble consisting of three–eight musicians performing works of chamber music (1 person per part, no conductor). The ensembles may include vocalists. The Graduate String Quartet and Graduate Brass Quintet are eligible to compete for comments only, not for prizes; however, members of the quartet/quintet may compete in other ensembles and be eligible for prizes. Other for-credit ensembles may compete provided the members and the ensemble meets all other criteria. There is a limit of one keyboard artist participating in each ensemble. There are no other restrictions on the makeup of each ensemble.*
*Competition coordinators will review all submissions to determine eligibility.
There is no limit to the number of different ensembles in which a student may compete.
There will be two divisions: Undergraduate Division and Graduate Division. If a competing ensemble has any member who is a certificate or graduate student, that ensemble will be placed into the graduate division.
Each ensemble must be sponsored by a faculty member.
Please assign a name to your ensemble for participation and program purposes.
Repertoire
Each ensemble must prepare two contrasting pieces or movements of pieces by different composers. The combined duration of the two pieces must be a minimum of 12 minutes and a maximum of 18 minutes. (Note: In order to stay within the time limit, cuts may be made in consultation with the sponsoring faculty member. Participants exceeding the time limit during the competition will be stopped after 18 minutes.) Each member of the ensemble must participate in all pieces/movements.
Transcriptions, arrangements, and reductions (unless by the composer) are not eligible; however, at the discretion of the sponsoring faculty member of an ensemble in consultation with the coordinator of the competition, reasonable instrument substitutions of closely related instruments may be allowed if in keeping with the original character and spirit of the composer.
Repertoire must be approved by the sponsoring faculty member.
Music does not need to be memorized.
No changes in repertoire are permitted after applications are submitted without the written permission of the ensemble’s sponsoring instructor; however, no change in repertoire will be permitted between the preliminary and final rounds.
Ensembles must provide three copies of each score for the jury. If the selection(s) is (are) not in public domain, at least one original score must be submitted. If the score was purchased in PDF format, the ensemble must provide proof that they are in possession of a legitimate copy (email confirmation, receipt, etc.).
Awards
Finalists in each division will receive a certificate of merit. A maximum of one first place and one second place award will be given in each division. Judges have the discretion of not filling a winning position if, in their opinion, a high level of artistry is not displayed.
- First-place Winners: $200 per ensemble member
- Second-place Winners: $100 per ensemble member
Chamber Music Community Engagement Award
The Chamber Music Community Engagement Award was established by Richard and Carolyn Lineback in 2006. This award provides travel funds for the winning chamber ensembles to present concerts and clinics in our community and region following the chamber music competition. In addition, recipients of this award will be recognized at the annual College of Musical Arts Honors and Awards Ceremony.
Pro Musica Awards
Pro Musica is a community organization dedicated to supporting our students in the College of Musical Arts. Annual membership fees support student travel. Income from the Pro Musica endowment provides annual scholarships. First and second-place winners of each division will receive a certificate of merit and the awards listed above.
