Summer Bridge
ACTION Summer Bridge Program
Dates for Summer Bridge 2021: July 2021
The ACTION Summer Bridge is an excellent link between high school and college life providing multiple benefits to student participants. This academic program prior to the first year of college enables incoming freshmen to live on campus in order to get familiar with the BGSU surroundings and get acclimated before the fall.
One of the aspects students enjoy the most about coming to the Summer Bridge program is the friendships that are built before college even starts. It can be daunting to arrive on campus with 3,500 unfamiliar freshmen. Because of the Bridge program, ACTION students already have around 25 friends to start off the school year.
During the Bridge program, students engage in a variety of daily morning and afternoon hands-on academic sessions during the weekdays that are related to science, mathematics, or education. Many faculty members assist with the Summer Bridge, enabling students to meet multiple instructors who they will encounter in their regular courses as they pursue their degrees. Students also earn three hours of college credit for an "Introduction to Education" course during Summer Bridge.
Some favorite hands-on sessions in the past have included:
- Reptiles and Biodiversity
- Discovering Mathematics in the Real World
- Bacteria Life (and Death)
- 3D Geometry
- Latent Fingerprint Developing
- Geocaching
- Race to the Future
- Astronomy
Several field trips are included in the Summer Bridge program as well as many fun evening and weekend events right on campus. Students also improve time management skills as they balance academics and social events.
The ACTION funds cover expenses during the Summer Bridge including:
- Summer tuition at BGSU (some course fees may be the responsibility of the student)
- Housing in air-conditioned residence hall
- On-campus meals
- All program field trips, events, and materials
This summer program allows students to get familiar with campus and the Bowling Green community, making it easier to find their way around in the fall. In fact, when they come back to campus, many find other freshmen asking them for directions!
