The Master of Arts in Spanish is nationally and internationally recognized, attracting students from all over the United States and many other countries for the past four decades. The ability to communicate complex ideas in Spanish and understand Hispanic cultures is an asset, especially as the United States is projected to be the country with the highest Spanish-speaking population in the world by 2050. A Master of Arts in Spanish focuses on improving language fluency and skills and expanding knowledge of Spanish, Latin American and Caribbean cultures and literatures.
Quality classroom experiences
Students in the program benefit from small classes and individual attention, allowing for the development of close student-faculty working relationships. They will have access to a wide variety of courses taught by a diverse scope of faculty and staff, all housed in one, vibrant community. Students also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture during BGSU’s study abroad program in Alcalá de Henares, Spain for up to one full academic year. Our Teaching Assistant Program allows students to gain valuable experience as Spanish language instructors.

Career opportunities
The program offers experiential learning in the U.S. with local Latina/o/x organizations/communities and abroad in locations such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. The program supports student research for presentations at conferences such as the Latino/a/x Issues Conference and Ohio Latin Americanist Conference, and for publication in the academic online journal La BloGoteca de Babel. Spanish graduates are prepared for work in a variety of service-oriented fields. Master’s students also often pursue doctoral degrees to prepare for academic careers in Spanish literature, linguistics, second language acquisition and Latin American cultural studies.

Curriculum
A total of 36 credit hours of coursework at the graduate level are required for the Master of Arts in Spanish. (A Spanish certificate for educators and professionals requires 18 credit hours). The flexible structure of the courses, including online and on-ground courses, are appealing to busy professionals who are interested in a graduate program in Spanish.

Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2022-2023, with our next reaffirmation of accreditation scheduled for 2032-2033.
