We are one of the only doctoral leadership studies programs in Ohio to offer flexible, hybrid coursework – one online, evening class each week and one or two on-campus weekends each semester.
Our doctoral program is a great choice for busy professionals looking for a part-time program or students looking for a full-time program with a graduate assistantship.
Our program draws post-master’s students from all kinds of backgrounds – elementary and secondary education, higher education, law, law enforcement, government, medicine, nursing, healthcare, psychology and social work.
The Ph.D. in leadership studies doesn’t lead to administrative licensure. But coursework included in the doctoral program may be used to qualify for a variety of Ohio school administrative licenses.

Curriculum
The BGSU doctoral program in leadership studies is designed to engage students in a rigorous process of inquiry, practice and reflection. It has a research-based, interdisciplinary focus.
The curriculum includes:
- Core leadership courses that focus on leadership theories and practices relevant to all organizations
- Research sequence designed to prepare you for your dissertation
- Required internship or special project
- Electives that allow you to meet your professional goals
You can complete your Ph.D. in three years of full-time coursework or four years if enrolled part time.

The leadership studies doctoral program is a program of the School of Counseling, Higher Education, Leadership and Foundations in the College of Education and Human Development.
Accreditation
Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2022-2023, with our next reaffirmation of accreditation scheduled for 2032-2033.
