BGSU Firelands to hold community events for April's total solar eclipse

HURON, Ohio — In celebration of April's total solar eclipse, Bowling Green State University Firelands invites the community to commemorate the celestial event during its free Solar Eclipse Watch Party from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at the Huron campus.

During the total solar eclipse, the moon will completely cover the sun, casting a shadow across the United States. Situated in the path of totality, BGSU Firelands will offer one of the best vantage points to witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon.

The BGSU Firelands Solar Eclipse Watch Party will feature a number of family-friendly activities, including movies, stories, arts and crafts and more, with some events requiring registration. Additionally, the Firelands Symphony Orchestra will perform pieces inspired by the sun and stars in McBride Arboretum and Center Courtyard from 1-2:30 p.m. During the eclipse, attendees will be able to watch the rare occurrence indoors via livestream or outdoors with special glasses provided for safe viewing. 

"We are thrilled to offer the community a chance to witness this rare celestial event at BGSU Firelands," said Ram Veerapaneni, interim dean at BGSU Firelands. "Our solar eclipse activities promise to fill the day with education and fun for all ages."

Leading up to the eclipse, BGSU Firelands is also hosting several exciting events, including:

• Eclipse Speaker Series: Community members can learn about the science behind eclipses and how to safely view them during speaking engagements with BGSU experts on March 14, 21, 28 and April 4 in the McBride Auditorium at the North Building.
• Photography Workshop: BGSU alumnus and professional photographer Joe Ritorto will share tips and techniques for capturing the eclipse at 11 a.m. on March 19 in the Cedar Point Center.
