Winners chosen in Art of Diversity: Art for the Public Good showcase
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A wide variety of community members, artists and performers from several counties contributed their best works to The Art of Diversity: Art for the Public Good and winners were announced Friday, Jan. 20 at Bowling Green State University.
Hosted by the BGSU Division of Diversity and Belonging and the Fine Arts Center Galleries at BGSU, the second annual showcase and competition featured works and performances by K-12 students and community members from Wood, Lucas and Erie counties as well as BGSU students, faculty and staff members. There were 72 entries to the showcase.
In the youth category, Carly Hemmelgarn of Lucas County won the Division of Diversity and Belonging Award for the piece, “Flowergirl.” Winning the President’s Award in the youth category was Ilah Reynolds of Erie County for “Calamity.”
In the adult category, BGSU student Blake Rupp won the Division of Diversity and Belonging Award for the piece, “Purity Bread.” The President’s Award in the adult category was won by BGSU student Sean Russell for the piece, “Anxiety No. 1.”
Taking home Best in Show for the 2D category was BGSU student Genesis Salone for “Be the Change.” Best in Show for the 3D category was awarded to BGSU student Delaney MeSun Shin for “Weapon of Choice: Camouflaged in Daylight.”
Performance art winners will be featured in the virtual gallery on The Art of Diversity page.
Bringing the University's mission to life in visual and performance art, "The Art of Diversity: Art for the Public Good" ran from Saturday, Jan. 14 through Friday, Jan. 20 in the Willard Wankelman Gallery at the School of Art in the Fine Arts Center at Bowling Green State University.
Entries were evaluated based on originality, interpretation of the theme (i.e., art for the public good), creative technique, composition and appearance/sound.
Best in Show winners have the opportunity to select an arts workshop or experience that the Division of Diversity and Belonging will sponsor up to a $250 value. The Best in Show high school senior winner (individual, not group, entries for visual or performing arts) will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University in the 2023-2024 academic year.
Committed to driving cultural vitality in the region, in 2022, Bowling Green State University held the inaugural Art of Diversity, The Art of Diversity: An Introspective Journey to Belonging, featuring visual and performance art from artists in Wood, Lucas and Erie counties.
