BGSU awarded $1.19M state grant to drive STEM education and careers in Ohio
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Recognized for investing in in-demand programs that drive Ohio's economic vitality, Bowling Green State University recently was awarded a new $1.19 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education's Choose Ohio First program to continue supporting student success and workforce needs in critical science, technology, engineering, math and medicine (STEM) fields.
A Choose Ohio First grant recipient since the program's 2008 inception, BGSU will continue using funds to develop new scholarship opportunities for incoming, high-achieving students who major in STEM-related fields.
Through the program, eligible first-time BGSU students will receive a renewable $3,000 scholarship that covers a total of four academic years, or eight semesters, helping to reduce debt and promote on-time graduation. Students also will receive comprehensive educational experiences that support their success and outcomes in the classroom, laboratory and other experiential learning environments.
"As one of the first universities in the state to receive Choose Ohio First funding, we are grateful for the continued support of the important work BGSU is doing to bolster STEM education and careers," said Dr. Betsy Johnson, director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships at BGSU. "This grant helps the University in its mission of keeping education accessible and affordable while also providing comprehensive opportunities that drive student success and Ohio's economic vitality."
As part of its commitment to supporting STEM-related careers, BGSU is offering three new academic programs in robotics engineering, electronic and computer engineering, and mechanical and manufacturing starting in Fall 2024, offering a unique blend of science and engineering application that employers say is needed in the current and future industry landscape.
The University's innovative degree programs will equip students with comprehensive skills that encompass both the fundamentals of engineering design and a strong foundation in math and science. Students also will acquire practical engineering expertise, enhancing their appeal to potential employers. Driven by strong demand and supported by regional industry leaders, BGSU engineering is poised to make a significant economic impact in the state of Ohio and the U.S. heartland of manufacturing.
With the goal of growing the number of students enrolling in and completing STEM programs, the Choose Ohio First program has helped more than 500 BGSU students succeed in programs and careers such as nursing, engineering, mechatronics and more.
