Employment Opportunities
The Learning Commons hires undergraduate and graduate students to work as Tutors, Supplemental Instructors, Academic Coaches, Writing Consultants, Clerical Support and Graduate Assistants. Below is a brief description of each student position within The Learning Commons:
Academic Coach
Academic Coaches work with students on an individual basis to develop successful study strategies. Specifically, Coaches train students in note-taking, textbook marking, active reading, active listening, time management, and learning styles. Coaches typically work with students for several sessions to develop and foster these strategies.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader
SI Leaders are students that successfully completed a historically difficult course at BGSU. SI Leaders repeat the course as an observer and then facilitate three, one-hour activity-based collaborative study sessions each week. SI Leaders must lesson plan for each session. The usual time commitment for this position is 10 hours/week.
Math & Stats Tutor
Math and/or Stats Tutors work with students during course-specific drop-in sessions. They provide students the opportunity to engage with the course material, provide insight into problem solving strategies, explore sample problems and course content, and promote a collaborative learning environment designed to help students strive toward independent learning. Math and/or Stats Tutors work with students to determine resources that will best help them breakdown and understand course material.
The duties of a Math and/or Stats tutor include (not all inclusive):
- Assist all students from the BGSU community.
- Hold exam reviews for specific math and/or stats courses.
- Help students learn and solve problems on their own.
- Help enable students to use resources to solve similar problems independently.
- Present to groups about math and/or stats tutoring services and The Learning Commons.
- Participate in professional development as provided, including staff meetings.
Course-based Tutor
Course-based Tutors work with students during subject-specific drop-in sessions and course-specific study groups. They provide students the opportunity to engage with the course material, provide insight into problem solving strategies, and promote a collaborative learning environment designed to help students strive toward independent learning. Course-based Tutors also work with students to determine resources that will best help them breakdown and understand course material.
The duties of a course-based tutor include (not all inclusive):
- Assist all students from the BGSU community.
- Provide students with various strategies, activities, and/or methods to approach course work and content.
- Help students engage in active learning, solve problems on their own, and independently use resources to solve similar problems and explore concepts.
- Present to groups about course-based tutoring services and The Learning Commons.
- Participate in professional development as provided, including staff meetings.
Writing Consultant
Writing Consultants work one-on-one with writers during face-to-face appointments and online sessions. They provide writers with an engaged audience and offer relevant insights and feedback about the writer’s process and text. Writing Consultants work to facilitate the writer’s growth at all stages of the writing process, on topics from any discipline, through a discussion of resources, skills, and rhetorical strategies.
The duties of a writing consultant include:
- Assist writers from the BGSU community.
- Provide writers a reader’s perspective of their work.
- Provide helpful feedback in response to a writer's particular writing task.
- Provide helpful insights regarding writing in general.
- Present to groups about writing topics and the writing center as required.
- Participate in professional development as provided, including weekly staff meetings.
Clerical
Clerical staff operating the reception desk in support The Learning Commons day-to-day functions. The clerical staff work to welcome students to the space, provide information regarding the Learning Commons services, and accurately check students in/out of services. Required strengths include interpersonal skills, professionalism, problem solving, consistency, attention to detail, adaptability, and excellent communication skills.
The duties of a clerical staff member include (not all inclusive):
- Provide PEAK customer service support to all students.
- Schedule and adjust appointments.
- Check students into Learning Commons services accurately and in a timely manner.
- Respond to email and telephone correspondences in a professional manner.
- Utilize computers in various ways, including collecting data and distributing electronic and paper surveys/evaluations.
Testing Proctor
The Testing Proctor position is only available to students currently enrolled in a graduate or post-bachelor's certificate program. A Testing Proctor will proctor exams in the University Testing Center within the Learning Commons, monitor the testing environment to ensure testing quality and security, and perform necessary clerical duties associated with registering students and setting up their testing sessions. Graduate Assistant
The Learning Commons employs several Graduate Assistants each academic year. Positions may change slightly from year-to-year. All positions are posted on the Graduate College website and include directions on how to apply for each position. Duties for GA positions in The Learning Commons are primarily administrative. Positions are posted on an annual basis, usually February - April.
