In Brief: March 23
ICS lecture looks at Rust Belt Chinatowns
“Rust Belt Chinatowns: The Urban Future of Racial Capitalism and Neoliberal Gentrification" is the topic of the next Institute for the Study of Culture and Society (ICS) Faculty Fellows Lecture.
Dr. Rebecca J. Kinney, a School of Cultural and Critical Studies faculty member and a 2016-17 ICS fellow, will present her talk at 10:30 a.m. on March 29 in 207 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
In this talk Kinney explores the stakes of our urban futures by analyzing the logics of racial capitalism in the "redevelopment" of 21st century Rust Belt cities: Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Her talk will focus on the recruitment of "multicultural diversity" in the neoliberal gentrification of Detroit to highlight the ways in which the spatial and discursive logics of uneven development are predicated upon the structural privileging of whiteness.
Kinney’s first book, “Beautiful Wasteland: The Rise of Detroitas America’s Postindustrial Frontier,” analyzes the centrality of race making in the contemporary narratives of urban decline and revitalization. As a scholar and teacher of ethnic studies and urban studies, her work illuminates the centrality of place, popular narratives and culture as key sites of racial formation.
The event is free and open to the public. Guests with disabilities are requested to indicate if they need special services, assistance or appropriate modifications to fully participate in this event by contacting Accessibility Services at access@bgsu.edu or 419-372-8495 prior to the event.
