A Division of the Bowling Green State University Department of Theatre & Film, the Huron Playhouse is Ohio's Oldest Continuing
Summer Theatre. It offers the best available talent from semi-professional and educational theatre arenas from across the
nation.
The Huron Playhouse is the oldest continually running summer theatre in the state of Ohio, and is nationally recognized as
a premiere educational summer theatre. The Huron Playhouse is nestled in the heart of Lake Erie Vacationland in the charming
community of Huron, Ohio. Centrally located an hour west of Cleveland, and an hour east of Bowling Green and Toledo, it stands
only two blocks from the beautiful shores of Lake Erie.
In the summer of 1949, under the guidance of Professor Frederick Walsh, the Huron Playhouse opened its doors for the first
summer season with the light wartime comedy John Loves Mary . For over half a century, the Playhouse has continued to provide to actors and community a well-balanced season of comedies,
dramas, mysteries, melodramas, Shakespeare, children's theatre, and musicals.
Over the years, the Playhouse has maintained a constant commitment to high quality. Five full-scale productions are mounted
in an intensive seven week season, with each show enjoying a five night run. Many alumni from the Playhouse have gone on to
perform on Broadway, in regional theatre, television, feature films, and commercials. Others have directed their talents and
skills to the technical, producing, and/or teaching aspects of theatre or film.
The mission of the Playhouse has always been to provide students with the necessary skills and abilities that offer well-rounded
training to use theatre in positive ways in their lives. Additionally, the Playhouse has welcomed community involvement for
children and adults of all ages, and gives the audiences top-notch entertainment at popular prices.
The Huron Playhouse company includes approximately 50 members including acting, technical, and administrative staff. Company
members receive undergraduate, master's, or doctoral credit hours in theatre performance, production, and management. All
University fees, room and board, and a stipend are provided to the students of the Playhouse. The company's experience of
living together, eating together, working and creating together, has fostered a family atmosphere that many have found hard
to leave behind at the end of the summer. Lifelong friendships, marriages, and business associations have resulted from a
summer at the Playhouse.
Bowling Green State University's Department of Theatre and Film program has been fulfilling its mission of outreach beyond
its home base for over five decades at the Huron Playhouse.
