The Department of Computer Science provides
consultants in Hayes 025 to assist students with lab
exercises assigned in computer science classes. The
graduate students serving as consultants are there to
assist you, but will not complete the assignments for
you. They have been instructed to provide general
assistance and answers to specific questions.
During the current semester, consultants will be
available on a regular
schedule, as posted.
Here are some suggestions to help you get the most
benefit from the consultants:
- Sign the sheet indicating that you would like
assistance and where you are working in the lab.
The consultant will come to you when it's your
turn.
- State clearly the problem you are having and
how you have already tried to fix it.
- Make sure that you understand the suggestions
you receive from the consultant.
- If you are still having difficulties after
making the suggested changes, attempt to resolve
the remaining problem(s) yourself before returning
to the consultant.
- Consultants work only with individual students
and not with groups of students (unless you are
working on a group project).
- Let the consultant know if he or she is
suggesting language features that you have not yet
studied in class.
- Bring your textbook to the lab so that the
instructor can refer you to the appropriate pages
for assistance.
If the lab is busy, the consultant has been told
to limit the time for each consulting session to
about five minutes. If you still need more help,
allow other students to get their questions answered
and then return to the consultant later.
