University Hall garners LEED gold for renovation | Summer campus construction update
The renovated University Hall, now LEED gold-certified
UNIVERSITY HALL GARNERS LEED GOLD FOR RENOVATION

It was the first building on Bowling Green State University’s campus, and now University Hall becomes the first renovated building on campus to receive the gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation.

Awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is “the most widely used green building rating system in the world and provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.”

While BGSU has received LEED designations for other new and renovated buildings, the gold designation for University Hall is particularly meaningful, President Rodney Rogers said.

“We are so pleased with the restoration and renovation of our University Hall, which is a highlight of campus and the locus of many of our most important student services,” he said, “and now to receive this LEED award further validates our commitment to good environmental stewardship and our pledge to reduce our carbon footprint.”

SUMMER CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION SEASON SET TO BEGIN

A number of infrastructure construction projects and a major building demolition will be taking place across campus this summer.

Beginning May 7, the tunnel between the central heating plant behind Lot E (at Thurstin Avenue) and Shatzel Hall will be renovated and rehabilitated. Portions of Lot E will be temporarily closed at times as the work progresses. Thurstin Avenue will have no through traffic between Court and Pike streets for six weeks, from May 22-July 2, but access will be maintained to the Administration Building loading dock drive and the entrance drive to Lot 7 at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The project is expected to be completed by the first week of July.

Also on May 7, the University’s Electrical Distribution Upgrade Project that began last summer will resume. The project will ultimately result in a much improved and more reliable campus electrical/power distribution system. Periodic scheduled electrical shutdowns to various buildings will occur as the work progresses. Affected will be Shatzel Hall, the Administration Building, Prout Chapel and Founders Hall. Building occupants and the campus community will be notified before each shutdown so that precautions such as turning off electrical equipment can be taken. The project will be completed by the end of June.

CAMPUS INVITED TO HOSKINS RIBBON-CUTTING THIS AFTERNOON

The University will honor donor Michael Hoskins ’77 today (April 26) at a celebratory ribbon-cutting and naming ceremony for the Michael E. Hoskins Grand Foyer in University Hall. The event begins at 4 p.m. on the University Hall Lawn. The BGSU community is invited to attend.

A longtime donor and supporter of global education and international experiences for students and faculty, Hoskins has provided a gift to endow the Hoskins Global Scholars program, which funds experiential learning trips abroad for BGSU students, and a gift for the renovation of the west foyer in University Hall.

EARN CYBERSECURITY CISSO CERTIFICATION THROUGH BGSU AND MILE2

BGSU will offer the Certified Information Systems Officer (CISSO) certification course this summer. The cybersecurity course is designed to benefit those who wish to earn Continuing Professional Education hours, make themselves more marketable with an additional skill set, or further their knowledge in a relevant field.

The course covers in-depth theory relating to the everyday implementation of essential security concepts, practices, monitoring and compliance. Covered topics include: symmetric cryptography and hashing, security architecture and attacks, access control, risk management, security management, authentication and more. Course content is taught completely online through BGSU’s eCampus, with course objectives based on Mile2® certification materials and criteria.

Registration is open now through June 1, and the eight-week course begins on June 11. For more information and to register today, visit the eCampus course website.
