Faculty Excellence Awards go to 18 | Earth Week events slated

Faculty Excellence Awards go to 18

Eighteen outstanding faculty members and academic advisers were honored at the annual Faculty Excellence Awards April 14. Scholarship, teaching, advising, community outreach and service were all showcased as the University recognized some of its most stellar academic community members.

2015 Master Teacher

As a counselor, teacher and adviser, Dr. Craig Vickio has always modeled compassion and caring for students. In appreciation of his excellence at all he does, the Student Alumni Connection has named him the 2015 Master Teacher, the highest award for faculty.



The BGSU Board of Trustees named a Distinguished Teaching Professor and presented three faculty with newly created Professorships of Excellence. The Professorship of Teaching Excellence is designated for faculty members who hold the rank of full professor and whose extraordinary achievements as effective teachers in their discipline or in interdisciplinary fields deserve special recognition. The Professorship of Research Excellence is conferred upon faculty members who are already full professors and who have established a robust record of research and publication or artistic and creative achievements in their disciplines that has brought national and international recognition.

Distinguished Teaching Professor

Dr. Dwayne Gremler has developed the marketing department's emphasis in services marketing, helping students prepare for careers in a growing area. He was named Distinguished Teaching Professor by the Board of Trustees at its February meeting.

Professorship of Teaching Excellence

Dr. Daniel Brahier's passion for teaching math and for preparing the next generation of math teachers has earned him the title Professor of Teaching Excellence.

Professor of Teaching Excellence

Dr. Vikki Krane brings an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of sport management, honed over 24 years of teaching and research, and always with the aim of empowering students to reach their goals. She was named a Professor of Teaching Excellence.

Professorship of Research Excellence

Dr. Susan Brown, chair of the Department of Sociology, has been an exceptionally productive research scholar, helping to shape the national discourse on the changing American family. Brown was named a Professor of Research Excellence.



Faculty Senate presented five awards at the ceremony.

Faculty Senate Lifetime Achievement Award

For his "profound and enduring contributions to the romance and classical studies department and the wider University community," Dr. Federico Chalupa, director of the International Studies Program, was given the Faculty Senate Lifetime Achievement Award.

Faculty Senate Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Sung-Yeon Park, telecommunications and graduate coordinator in the School of Media and Communication, has distinguished herself as a focused, dedicated professional. Her efforts have earned her the Faculty Senate Distinguished Service Award.

Faculty Senate Recognition for Community Involvement

Tracy McGinley, a criminal justice faculty member at BGSU Firelands, won the Faculty Senate Recognition for Community Involvement.

Faculty Senate Faculty Mentor Award

As a communication studies faculty member and director of the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, Dr. Sandra Faulkner generously shares her insight, guidance, and scholarly pursuits with her colleagues and students, earning her the Faculty Senate Faculty Mentor Award.

Faculty Senate Recognition for Chair/School Director Leadership

Dr. Dawn Shinew, director of the School of Teaching and Learning, received this year's Faculty Senate Recognition for Chair/School Director Leadership.



The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research gave two awards at the ceremony, presented by Dr. Michael Ogawa, dean of the Graduate College and vice president for research and economic development.

Olscamp Research Award

Dr. Robert Michael (Mike) McKay, Ryan Professor of Biological Sciences and winner of the 2015 Olscamp Research Award, is a regional and national leader in the study of toxic algal blooms and on microbial communities in frozen lakes and the open sea.

Outstanding Early Career Award

In the short four years he has been with the mathematics education department in the School of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Jonathan Bostic has compiled a remarkable number of achievements. In recognition, Bostic was selected for the Outstanding Early Career Award.

Elliott L. Blinn Award for Faculty-Undergraduate Student Basic Research/Creative Work

Leigh-Ann Pahapill, art, received the Elliott L. Blinn Award for Faculty-Undergraduate Student Innovative Basic Research/Creative Work.

President's Award for Academic Advising of Undergraduate students by Faculty and Staff

Robert Kline, academic adviser in the College of Arts and Sciences, received a 2015 President's Award for Academic Advising of Undergraduate Students.

Sally Walker, academic adviser for the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering, earned a President's Award for Academic Advising of Undergraduate students.

Dr. Sarah Smith Rainey has a reputation for being a creative, proactive and generous adviser in the School of Cultural and Critical Studies, earning her the President's Award for Academic Advising of Undergraduate Students by Faculty and Staff.

Dr. Louisa Ha, School of Media and Communication, received a President's Award for Collaborative Research and Creative Work.

Earth Week
BGSU promotes sustainability in the community

The University will recognize Earth Week 2015 (April 20-25) with free events and films intended to raise awareness of environmental matters and offer opportunities to help decrease the University's carbon footprint. A highlight on Earth Day itself, April 22, is the annual Eco-Fair, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Union Oval, featuring organizations, both on-campus and within the community, that deal with the environment and sustainability.

OBITUARIES
Neil Pohlman, 85, a professor emeritus of educational administration and supervision, died April 12. He taught at the University from 1962-85, returning to teach until 1996. Memorial contributions may be given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Bowling Green State University Foundation - College of Education and Human Development. See funeral arrangements.

The next forum in the series on BGSU finances and budget planning for the next fiscal year will be held at 9:30 a.m. April 20 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater.
