Hear Coletta discuss ‘North by Northwest’ on podcast
Chuck Coletta, popular culture, is the guest on the "Film & Water" podcast this week where he discusses Alfred Hitchcock's classic "North by Northwest" starring BGSU alumna Eva Marie Saint. “Film & Water” is a treat for movie lovers, going in depth with a variety of classic and cult favorites, Coletta says.
Author to share joys, challenges of raising a child with Down syndrome
Paul Daugherty, author of “An Uncomplicated Life: A Father’s Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter,” will speak at BGSU Firelands Saturday (Sept. 24). His 2 p.m. talk in the Cedar Point Center will be preceded by a book signing at 1 p.m.
The talk is free to the public. Copies of the book will be available at the event and are also available online through publisher William Morrow.
Daugherty and his wife, Kerry, are the proud parents of Jillian Daugherty-Mavriplis, who was born with Down syndrome. Bringing her home from the hospital, Paul and Kerry were flooded with worry and uncertainty, but also overwhelming love, which they channeled to “the job of building the better Jillian.”
In the book, Daugherty provides stories from Jillian’s mischievous childhood and moves to her early adulthood, tracing her journey to find happiness and purpose in her adult life. Having graduated from high school and college, Jillian now works to support herself and recently wed the love of her life.
According to one reviewer, “Through Jillian’s story, readers witness the wonder of a father deeply devoted to his daughter … An expressive, nostalgic series of memories of living life with a special needs child.”
Daugherty, a sports columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer since 1994 and author/coauthor of several books on sports, believes parents learn as much about life from the child as the child does from the parent.
Jillian has inspired those around her to live better and more fully. The day she was born, Daugherty says, was the last bad day. As he lovingly writes, “Jillian is a soul map of our best intentions” — a model of grace, boundless joy and love for all of us.
The event is sponsored by BGSU Firelands Student and Campus Activities and the Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities in partnership with the Clearwater Council of Governments and the Sandusky and Huron libraries.
Additional information on the event is available online. Questions can be directed to Trinidy Jeter.
