Bachelor of Arts

Undecided in Arts and Sciences

BGSU offers options for students who wish to explore several Bachelor of Arts programs before choosing a major. Undecided students can take time to explore the many liberal arts classes across BGSU’s majors and minors.

Your Life Design coach and academic advisor can help you navigate your college journey based on your interests, talents and prior experiences.

Some majors need to start with prerequisites relatively early to complete within four years of college. BGSU academic advisors can help you cover your prerequisites if you have specialized degrees in mind, but haven’t decided on an exact major.

Yes, it is okay to be an undecided major!

Each year approximately 1,000 new freshmen enroll at BGSU with an undecided academic major. Additionally, 60-80 percent of students who arrive on campus with a declared major change that major at least one time.

Deciding how to best position yourself for your future is a process of self-discovery. At BGSU, this journey to self-discovery is facilitated by the Life Design Program and the Office of Academic Advising and Planning

Life Design is a new and innovative approach to higher education where students participate in a multi-year journey designed to shape their college experience and beyond.

Working with a Life Design Coach, students explore big questions – what they want to do, and who they want to become – while shaping their college journey. Students gain the skills needed to find purpose, prioritize well-being, make connections, and jump-start their career.

The Office of Academic Advising and Planning works with all undecided major students in exploring majors and career paths. Advisors help you make informed decisions about course selection, understand university curriculum, build an academic schedule, and connect with resources, such as tutoring and career services, to support your success at BGSU.

Academic advisors are committed to ensuring that students with an undecided major have every opportunity to explore what the BGSU community has to offer them before selecting a major.

Curriculum

The BGSU College of Arts and Sciences features academic disciplines traditionally identified as being within the liberal arts: science and math, social sciences, arts and humanities.

You can enroll as an undecided major in the College of Arts and Science with a Bachelor of Arts and receive academic advising about any area within the college. Academic advisors help you identify your interests and choose a major that complements those interests.

Career exploration is encouraged. Many opportunities exist for internships, cooperative education assignments, study abroad, service-learning and campus employment.

Career

Many of today’s careers don’t require a specific kind of degree, and changing careers is more and more common. Following your interests, identifying your values, and unleashing your curiosity are more likely to lead to a major you care about and a career that can sustain your passion.

Bachelor of Arts programs tend to focus on broader knowledge and skills in critical thinking, creativity, writing and communication. The world needs both generalists and specialists, and there are promising careers for both.

Complementing your major with a minor can open up additional career possibilities. Literature and arts management may lead to a career in publishing or nonprofit organizations. A Bachelor of Arts in a world language, with a minor in economics, could lead to a career in business development abroad.

BGSU Life Design coaches are here to help undecided students examine their skills, interests, values and personal characteristics. Students can investigate majors, campus organizations, occupations and career paths with a better understanding of themselves.

Academic advisors can help identify academic courses, majors and experiential learning opportunities that enhance future employment options. This is a proven pathway to making informed career and life decisions and results in realistic goals and an action plan.
